Turner

Went to the Cleveland Museum of Art with Oliver this week. Together we stared into Turner's "burning of the house of parliament." The light was so intense a sky carved in paint and color. He lays it down so heavy and yet it seems like air clouds light. My studio is crazy forty things going a room of intensity I find it intimidating till I stand at the easel and then it fades the painting takes over. I finished my first two portraits they have inspired me so much.In New York so many lessons from the masters starting to filter through them and apply them to my painting . Things moving faster clearer. The light last couple of days all orange from the leaves on my walks and runs it glow, Turner .

old studio 2007 show prep

Quote from Delacroix's journal

Paris 1850 Friday 25 January
"It has occurred to me that artists who have sufficiently vigorous style are most to be excused from exact imitation, Michelangelo, for example. When they reach a certain point, they more than make up independence and audacity for what they lose in literal truth."
Eugene Delacroix

Really enjoying his journals great insight

Weekend painting

Got out an old brush from my dad's old studio in kingston Ontario.kept it with me in every studio since high-school. Used it this weekend fifty plus years of painting of painting in it. Feels to me like it has it's own soul.

Raining again, focusing on portrait of "Mac". My wolf hounds keep trying to sleep at the foot of my easel, madding. Have begun work on some marine paintings of whales influenced by historical accounts. I'm obsessing over building up paint to create feel of a wave, the color, the transparency. The ocean is a magic force to try and capture in a painting will take some time. Next couple of days busy with family studio looks far away,  hard on a roll. Hard to work at night now with the weather changing tired want to read in bed, sleep, dream.

Gilligan shoot today for new paintings, weather really getting to me. Thought of firing up the wood stove to make some pizza after painting. So cold just cant stop thinking of hot food. Really ready for the  new work week in the studio thing really rolling as the paint begins to flow. Some ideas finally becoming clear as I continue to work. Inner distractions beginning to fade sleep helping a lot. Been reading Delacriox journals very inspiring the intensity, love of painting/color overwhelming to read.

friday end of the painting week

Lots of paint going down, wet color everywhere. Emotions are high about new paintings, new feel. Looking for some new voice, may hit the road and go to the art museum to touch base with the masters.

Started new portrait today, looking at the faces of my kids as I paint them. A wonder to study them so close.
